Frog Out of the Well (2019)
“The frog in the well” is a Korean proverb describing someone with a narrow and limited view of the world. Seeing myself as such a frog, I created these brooches as representations of myself and set them free to travel beyond the well and explore the wider world through their wearers. As the wearer moves, a small brass element inside each brooch produces a jingling sound that evokes the croak of a frog.
‘우물 안 개구리’는 세상을 바라보는 시야가 좁고 제한된 사람을 뜻하는 한국의 속담이다. 나 자신을 우물 안 개구리와 같은 존재로 여겼던 나는 개구리들을 나의 분신과도 같은 브로치로 만들었다. 그리고 이들이 착용자와 함께 우물을 벗어나 더 넓은 세상을 여행하고 탐험할 수 있도록 세상 밖으로 풀어놓았다. 착용자가 움직일 때마다 각각의 브로치 안에 들어 있는 작은 황동 조각이 딸랑이는 소리를 내며 개구리의 울음소리를 연상시킨다.
