Vomit it! - a Metalsmithing installation work with video projection

This piece is a small devotional shrine designed to hold a miniature representation of a sacred being or saint for prayer and contemplation. Inside the open mouth of a formed metal face, a small human skeleton kneels in prayer on its tongue. The face appears to be expelling the skeleton from within. It is set inside a translucent, oval-shaped acrylic structure, with the two components joined by a tubular rivet. A looping video is projected onto the piece, showing metal inside a crucible repeatedly melting and solidifying.

Rather absurdly, the idea for this work came to me while I was vomiting into a toilet after drinking. The painful act of expelling something from the body felt as though I were also purging my inner anxieties and worldly afflictions. This experience developed into the image of a face vomiting up a praying skeleton and an oval structure reminiscent of a toilet. Originating from one of the body’s most abject and painful moments, the form is transformed into a devotional shrine, revealing the relationship between expulsion and purification, suffering and prayer.

이 작업은 신성한 존재나 성인의 작은 형상을 내부에 두고 기도와 묵상에 사용할 수 있도록 제작한 소형 감실이다. 입을 벌린 금속 얼굴의 혀 위에는 무릎을 꿇고 기도하는 작은 인간 해골이 놓여 있으며, 얼굴은 자신의 내부로부터 해골을 토해 내는 듯한 모습을 하고 있다. 금속 얼굴은 반투명한 타원형 아크릴 구조 안에 놓이고, 두 구성 요소는 관형 리벳으로 연결되어 있다. 작품 위에는 도가니 속 금속이 반복해서 녹고 굳어지는 모습을 담은 영상이 연속해서 투사된다.

다소 우습게도, 이 작업은 술에 취해 변기에 토하던 순간 떠올랐다. 고통스럽게 몸 안의 것을 쏟아 내는 행위가 마치 내면의 불안과 번뇌를 함께 토해 내는 모습처럼 느껴졌다. 이러한 경험은 기도하는 해골을 토해 내는 얼굴과 변기를 연상시키는 타원형 구조로 발전했다. 신체의 가장 비천하고 고통스러운 순간에서 출발한 형상은 감실이라는 종교적 사물로 전환되며, 배출과 정화, 고통과 기도 사이의 관계를 드러낸다.
