Installation for Grind an Axe to make a Needle: 마부위침(磨斧爲針) Project

This is a multimedia installation. It consists of a steel needle inserted into a brass tube holder. It sits on a circular steel plate, which, in turn, is inserted into the top of a white pedestal.

The residual steel dust from grinding the axe is scattered on the plate. It reacts to the vibrations created by a woofer speaker inside the pedestal near the top. These patterns are similar to the colored patterns of the Mandala sand art created by Tibetan monks in deep states of meditation to symbolically represent the universe.

There is an 11” by 18” sloping shelf which extends from the top of the front of the pedestal. Upon the shelf rests a flip book bound in the traditional Korean way. The book contains a photographic record of my daily grinding as well as the legend of Li Bai.
