Miser’s Fish, inspired by a legend of 자린고비(玼吝考妣)
This work was inspired by the Korean folktale of Jaringobi, an extreme miser who ate his meals while looking at a dried yellow croaker hanging from the ceiling and imagining its taste.
As an international student struggling financially and often feeling hungry, I asked myself, “What kind of function would be truly necessary and useful to me at this moment?” This question led me to consider whether an object could perform a sensory function through sight and imagination, beyond its physical utility.
I made the piece using discarded metal sheets salvaged from the printmaking department. After forming the metal into the shape of a dried fish, I painted its surface with oil paint to heighten its realism. I also made it considerably larger than an actual dried yellow croaker, intending its exaggerated scale to evoke a greater sense of imagined fullness. Both realistic and oversized, the fish creates a visual illusion and playfully suggests that an object can stimulate taste and bodily sensation without being eaten or physically used.

The Making of Miser’s Fish
I used a CAD program to make perfectly matching planar figure in paper from a 3D digital model. The paper template was used as a pattern for fabricating the fish form out of sheet metal, in a sense like metal origami.
