These Objects are Fucking Functional

This series consists of large anal plugs known as the Goliath size, made with traditional metalsmithing techniques. I created the work to satirize the common belief that only elegant and refined objects can represent function in craft, as well as the sense of class hierarchy behind that belief.

Words such as utility, beauty, everyday life, warmth, and tranquility repeatedly appear in Korean craft exhibitions. This language reinforces a fixed idea of what craft should be. Yet in contemporary life, a sex toy hidden from others may have a more specific and urgent use than an elegant silver teapot.

The sizes are based on anal plugs that are actually sold. I raised and chased the forms from brass sheet, then plated them with 14K rose gold, silver, and 14K yellow gold. Their hollow construction and detachable parts provide a suitable weight and make them easier to clean. The order of bronze, silver, and gold follows their increasing sizes, recalling medals and competition rankings while satirizing the hierarchy of the craft world. Each face bears an ahegao expression that exaggerates sexual pleasure. Made with traditional techniques and precious metals, these sex toys are, as the inscription on each base declares, literally “Fucking Functional.”

Just as the anus of an anal plug user gradually expands to accommodate larger plugs, the boundaries of craft also expand slowly but surely.

이 물체들은 좆나게 기능적입니다.

이 작업은 ‘골리앗 사이즈’라 불리는 대형 애널 플러그를 전통적인 금속공예 기법으로 제작한 시리즈이다. 고상하고 정제된 사물만이 공예의 기능을 대변할 수 있다는 통념과 그 안에 스며든 계급의식을 풍자하고자 했다.

한국의 공예 전시에는 ‘쓰임’, ‘아름다움’, ‘일상’, ‘온기’, ‘고요함’처럼 정적이고 고상한 단어들이 반복해서 등장한다. 이러한 언어는 “공예는 이러해야 한다”는 고정관념을 강화한다. 그러나 동시대의 누군가에게는 고풍스러운 은주전자보다 남들에게 감추고 싶은 성인용품이 더 구체적이고 절실한 쓰임을 지닐 수 있다.

작업의 크기는 실제로 판매되는 애널 플러그를 참고했다. 황동판을 레이징과 체이싱 기법으로 성형하고 14K 로즈골드와 은, 14K 옐로골드로 도금했다. 속이 빈 분리형 구조라 무게가 적절하고 세척도 용이하다. 크기에 따라 동색, 은색, 금색으로 이어지는 배열은 메달과 공모전의 순위를 연상시키며 공예계의 위계를 풍자한다. 얼굴에는 성적 쾌감을 과장한 하위문화의 ‘아헤가오’ 표정을 묘사했다. 전통 기법과 귀금속으로 만들어진 이 성인용품은 바닥에 새긴 문구처럼 말 그대로 ‘좆나게 기능적(Fucking Functional)’이다.

애널 플러그 사용자의 항문이 더 큰 플러그를 받아들이며 서서히 확장되듯, 공예의 경계 또한 느리지만 분명하게 확장된다.
