Open the Goddamn Mouth Again

I conceived this work while living in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Made of sterling silver, the object combines the form of a protective face mask with that of a mouth-opening gag that forces the wearer’s mouth open.

At a time when the impact of COVID-19 was particularly severe in the United States, Asian people were exposed to racial discrimination while also being pressured to prove that they were not infected with the virus. Even when wearing masks to protect themselves, they were sometimes suspected of being infected, confronted with accusations such as “Why are you wearing a mask?” and subjected to unprovoked verbal abuse. Asian women of smaller stature, who were often perceived as less able to resist, became frequent targets of such attacks.

The moment a person opens their mouth is not always beautiful, as it can reveal something raw and unguarded within. Despite wearing masks to protect themselves, those who were forced to remove them and open their mouths to prove that they were not infected were once again made to expose their beautifully ugly human selves.

This work consists of three components: the mask that forces the wearer’s mouth open, a photograph of an Asian woman wearing it, and a vector illustration created from the photograph using Rhinoceros.

The date shown in the photograph marks the day the novel coronavirus was first identified. It symbolically represents the experience of Asian people who, from the beginning of the pandemic, were forced to open their mouths and prove that they were not infected.

Open the 아가리 Again

나는 코로나19 팬데믹 기간에 미국에서 생활하며 이 작업을 구상했다. 정은으로 제작한 이 물체는 호흡기를 보호하는 마스크와 착용자의 입을 강제로 벌리는 개구기의 형태를 결합한 것이다.

미국에서 코로나19로 인한 피해가 심각하던 당시, 아시아인들은 인종차별에 노출되는 동시에 자신이 바이러스에 감염되지 않았음을 증명하도록 강요받는 분위기 속에 놓여 있었다. 스스로를 보호하기 위해 마스크를 착용했음에도 감염자로 의심받아 “왜 마스크를 쓰고 있느냐”는 힐난과 이유 없는 욕설을 듣는 일도 빈번하게 발생했다. 특히 상대적으로 저항하기 어렵다고 여겨지는 체구가 작은 아시아인 여성들이 이러한 공격의 표적이 되곤 했다.

사람이 입을 벌리는 순간이 언제나 아름다운 것은 아니다. 그 행위는 내면의 가공되지 않은 무방비한 모습을 드러내기 때문이다. 자신을 보호하기 위해 마스크를 착용했음에도 그것을 벗고 입을 열어 결백을 증명하도록 강요받은 사람들은, 다시 아름답고도 추한 인간 본연의 모습을 노출하게 된다.

이 작업은 세 부분으로 구성된다. 착용자의 입을 강제로 벌리는 마스크, 아시아인 여성이 이를 착용한 모습을 담은 사진, 그리고 그 사진을 라이노(Rhinoceros)를 이용한 벡터 드로잉으로 재구성한 일러스트이다.

사진에 표시된 날짜는 코로나바이러스가 처음 발견된 날을 가리킨다. 이는 팬데믹의 시작과 함께 자신의 입을 열어 결백을 증명하도록 강요받게 된 아시아인의 상황을 상징적으로 드러낸다.
