Grind an Axe to Make a Needle: 마부위침(磨斧爲針) Project

This work was inspired by the story of Chinese Li Bai’s story that celebrates persistence. For this work, I ground an axe for an hour every day that eventually resulted in a needle. I collected the dust and used sandpaper, and I also recorded all of working process as video. Through this yearlong project, I wanted to investigate the meditative significance of contemporary metalsmithing practice.

This project is consisted of 3 different components – the needle, a case, and a video. The case is made of steel dusts from the axe grinding, and the video projection behind the objects shows condensed working process.

본 작업은 당나라 시인 이태백의 일화에서 유래한 ‘마부위침(磨斧爲針)’, 즉 ‘도끼를 갈아 바늘을 만든다’는 고사에서 영감을 받아 제작한 동시대 공예 작업이다. 이는 꾸준히 노력하면 어떤 일이든 이룰 수 있다는 의미를 담고 있다.

나는 이 이야기가 실제로 가능한지 확인하기 위해 약 1년 동안 매일 한 시간씩 도끼를 갈아 바늘을 만들었다. 반복되는 노동 속에서 떠오른 생각들을 그날 사용한 사포에 기록하고, 연마 과정에서 발생한 철가루와 사포 가루 등의 부산물도 빠짐없이 수집해 보관했다.

약 1년에 걸쳐 완성한 이 작업은 세 부분으로 구성된다. 제작 과정을 기록한 비디오 퍼포먼스, 노동의 결과물인 바늘, 그리고 수집한 부산물로 만든 케이스이다. 전시장에서는 이 세 요소를 우퍼 스피커를 활용한 설치물과 함께 공개했다.

나는 이 작업을 통해 노동의 의미를 되짚는 동시에, 현대 공예를 넘어선 동시대 공예의 제작 방식에 관해 관객과 나 자신에게 질문을 던진다.

This legend is about Li Bai, Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty.

Li Bai was naughty and disliked study when he was a child.

One day he saw an old woman grinding an axe on a big stone when he was playing by a river.

Driven by curiosity, Li Bai came up and asked,

"What are you doing, granny?"

"Grinding an axe." said the old women without stopping.

"Then what for?" he asked again.

"To make a sewing needle," was the answer.

"What?!" little Li Bai was puzzled,

"you want to grind something so big into a needle? It will take many years."

"It doesn't matter. As long as I persevere, there is nothing one cannot achieve in the world.

Certainly I can make a needle from the axe."

Deeply moved by what the old woman said, Li Bai adopted a renewed

interest in studying and finally became one of the greatest poets in China.

도끼를 갈아 바늘을 만든 이야기: 마부위침(磨斧爲針)

이 이야기는 당나라의 시인 이태백에 관한 일화이다.

어린 시절 이태백은 장난이 심하고 공부하기를 싫어했다.

어느 날 강가에서 놀던 그는 한 노파가 커다란 돌에 도끼를 갈고 있는 모습을 보았다. 호기심이 생긴 이태백은 노파에게 다가가 물었다.

“할머니, 무엇을 하고 계세요?”

노파는 손을 멈추지 않은 채 대답했다.

“도끼를 갈고 있단다.”

“도끼를 갈아서 무엇을 하시려고요?”

이태백이 다시 묻자 노파가 답했다.

“바느질할 때 쓰는 바늘을 만들려고 한단다.”

“뭐라고요?”

어린 이태백은 이해할 수 없다는 듯 물었다.

“그렇게 큰 도끼를 갈아서 바늘로 만들겠다고요? 그러려면 아주 오랜 시간이 걸릴 텐데요.”

“그건 중요하지 않단다. 포기하지 않고 꾸준히 노력한다면 세상에 이루지 못할 일은 없지. 계속 갈다 보면 이 도끼도 반드시 바늘이 될 수 있을 거야.”

노파의 말에 깊은 감명을 받은 이태백은 새로운 마음으로 공부에 정진했고, 마침내 중국을 대표하는 위대한 시인 중 한 사람이 되었다.
